Changes to the Practical Driving Test

October 15, 2010

In October 2010, the DSA introduced a new element to the practical driving test! This element was introduced to put the student into a realistic scenario for driving after they have passed. It is called the Independent Driving Element. Previous to the addition of this element, learner drivers were required to perform 2 manoeuvres out of a possible 4. This has now been changed to allow this new addition, with only 1 manoeuvre required.

The student will now have to have approximately 10 minutes of independent driving, following directions, road signs or a combination of the two, to arrive at a predetermined point. Not to worry though, you will not be penalised for losing your way, or taking a wrong turning so long as you do so in a controlled safe manner. The examiner is looking at your control of the vehicle and your ability to drive safely, not your sense of direction. By putting the student under pressure of having to make their own decisions while driving, it lets the examiner get an insight to how the driver will cope after they have their full licence.

The length of the practical driving test is not thought to increase at all, only if the student takes a wrong turning or gets lost. At this point the examiner will help by getting you back on track!
